Why Every Chicago North Shore Parent Should Schedule a Kids Portrait Session for Their Child

Chicago Kids Portrait Session

What Is a Kids Portrait Session? (+ 5 Tips for Making the Most of It)

If you’ve been hearing about kids portrait sessions but aren’t quite sure what they are — or why parents are raving about them — this post is for you.

Unlike traditional family photos or school portraits, a kids portrait session is all about celebrating your child’s true self — from joyful smiles and playful expressions to calm, thoughtful, fine-art poses.

Whether your child is bold and bubbly or quiet and curious, the goal is to capture their authentic personality in this stage of life before it changes again (and it always does!).

5 Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Child’s Portrait Session

1. Let Them Be Themselves

Skip the stiff outfits and let your child wear something they love — whether it’s a simple tee, overalls, or a dress they never want to take off. The more “them” they feel, the more their personality will shine.

2. Embrace the Mess

Flyaway hair? Missing teeth? Silly faces? Those are exactly the moments worth capturing — they’re what you’ll want to remember one day.

3. Bring a Favorite Prop or Toy

Something they love — like a stuffed animal, favorite sports gear, or hat — can help them feel comfortable and spark genuine emotion.

4. Talk to Them About the Session

Let them know to just be themselves. “We’re going to hang out and the photographer will ask you to give different expressions, like happy, sad, silly, serious, thoughtful. If she asks for a silly face, you can make that funny face you do at home. She'll gently guide you so we can capture all the little faces and moments that make you...you"

Also a little encouragement goes a long way. Hype them up with positive words before and after — “You were amazing!” or “I love how you just got to be YOU today!”

5. Think Big When It Comes to Prints

These portraits make gorgeous large-frame wall art — clean, timeless, and full of heart. Many parents say they’re their favorite photos to display at home.
